By Dena Tilson

Have you said the words, "I've tried everything to save my marriage. I don't know what else to do"? Even though you have tried what you believe is everything, the problem may be that the things you have tried are all the wrong ways to try to save your marriage.

There are approaches that work and approaches that don't work. Unfortunately, when trying to save their marriage, most people use the wrong approach. So, lets take a look at some things that many people will try that just don't work.

You may have tried convincing your spouse of the error of their ways, which quickly turns into an argument. No one likes to have their faults pointed out. Even though what you are saying may be 100% the truth. At this point in your marriage your spouse, does not want to hear you pointing out all the ways they have failed you and your marriage. So, quit blaming. It only drives your spouse further away.

You may have tried to gain your spouses sympathy by resorting to tears or by begging and pleading. In the first place, sympathy is not what you need from your spouse, you need their respect and their love. Also, what you didn't realize is when your spouse is considering divorce, they have usually emotionally checked out of the marriage. Begging, pleading and tears don't gain sympathy, they usually gain disgust. Your spouse will only see you as weak and needy

You may have tried manipulating your spouse. This is never a good idea. Manipulation is just a thinly veiled attempt at control and of trying to get what you want at all costs. A good marriage is built on trust and manipulation is a sure trust killer.

Pointing our faults, trying to gain sympathy or manipulation are all surefire ways to push your spouse further away. Have you been guilty of any of these wrong approaches?
